How to Prevent Bed Bugs

While it may feel impossible to completely avoid bed bugs, there are some steps you can take to reduce your risk of accidentally picking them up while out and about. Here are some of the best ways to prevent bed bugs:

  • Know how to spot the signs of bed bugs: A major sign of an infestation are black or red spots on mattresses and upholstery. You may also come across creamy-white eggs, exoskeletons, or dead insects. If you find any of these in a public place, leave and immediately vacuum your luggage and wash your clothes on high heat.
  • Thoroughly inspect new items: Whether you’re buying a t-shirt or a couch, take just a couple of minutes to look around for any indications that the item has bed bugs. For furniture, look in all of the cracks and crevices, including any voids that could be hiding some insects.
  • Be cautious in hotel rooms: While it may feel good to plop down on the bed after traveling all day, carefully inspect your hotel room for signs of an infestation. Look at the headboard, the mattress, carpet, and the closet to see if there are bed bugs nearby. Also, store your suitcase on a rack to reduce its contact with carpet.
  • Use a mattress protector and be vigilant: A mattress protector can help keep bed bugs out of your immediate sleeping area. However, it’s important to know that these pests may hide nearby, such as in your closet or behind your headboard. Keep an eye out for signs of an infestation and contact a professional immediately if you find anything that looks suspicious.

How to Protect Your Home From Bed Bugs

In addition to being cautious when traveling or buying new items, you can also take some precautions in your own home to reduce your chances of experiencing an infestation. Vacuum regularly and reduce clutter that the pests could use for hiding spaces. Clean pet beds regularly on high heat, and be careful if you use a shared laundry facility.

Despite our best efforts, though, it’s still possible to pick up bed bugs. If you are worried that these pests may have found their way into your home, call a bed bug removal company right away to get rid of them as quickly as possible.
