Do Bed Bug Bites Itch?

Bed bug bites have the potential to leave behind red, inflamed marks on your skin that are intensely itchy. While not everyone reacts to these bites, itchiness stands out as the most common symptom for those who do. Common side effects of bed bug bites include:

  • Itchiness
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Tenderness

Why Bed Bug Bites Are Hard to Notice

Like a mosquito bite, bed bug bites are hard to notice until a few minutes or hours later. Bed bugs inject an anesthetic and an anticoagulant, preventing immediate realization of being bitten. When the bite eventually manifests, commonly after a few hours or days, several symptoms may be observed. The bite typically appears slightly swollen and red, accompanied by itching or irritation of the skin. Bed bug bites can lead to common side effects such as insomnia, skin problems, and heightened anxiety stemming from the infestation.

How Long do Bed Bug Bites Last?

Once formed, bed bug bites can persist for one to two weeks if they undergo proper healing. Individuals with stronger reactions to insect bites, in general, may experience healing times extending to three weeks or more. Allowing a bite to heal without scratching is the most effective way to expedite the recovery from the bites. While most people experience normal healing, some may react poorly, even exhibiting allergic reactions, warranting immediate attention from a medical professional.

Is it Bad to Scratch a Bed Bug Bite?

Though it’s difficult, resist the urge to scratch at any insect bite—including bed bugs. Scratching can impede the healing process, reopen more serious wounds, and exacerbate the bites. In severe cases, bed bug bites may become infected, leading to worsened symptoms, including fever or nearby lymph node swelling. If you are ever worried about an insect bite, contact your doctor right away.

Waking up covered in bites is never pleasant, so if you think you have an infestation, contact your local exterminator for help.
