Old House Borer Beetles in Suffolk County & Nassau County
Old house borers, as their name suggests, burrow or โboreโ into houses. Or actually, their larvae do. Theyโre a type of long-horned beetle, which is characterized by their long antennae. Adult beetles emerge from wood when the weather is warm. While they can fly, if they can find a suitable place to lay eggs nearby, they will most likely do so.
Old House Borer Beetle Habitat
Old house borer beetles spend much of their lives in wood. Preferring softwoods to hardwoods and wood thatโs ten years old or less, each female lays about 50-200 eggs, which hatch in a matter of weeks and begin boring further in. It takes about three to six years on average for the larvae to fully develop and emerge.
Evidence of old house borer beetles can be seen in the small oval holes they make in wood, approximately โ – โ โ across.
Old House Borer Beetle Behaviors, Threats, or Dangers
As is common in the insect world, the larvae of house boring beetles cause the most damage. Adults themselves are rarely seen. Contrary to their name, they preferย newย houses as newer wood contains a protein they seek, and most infestations occur in homes that are ten years old or less. While they can inflict costly damage on your home, theyโre not common.
Because theyโre uncommon, it can be difficult to identify a house boring beetle infestation. A professional exterminator can apply treatment for old house borers that works well.
