What do Oriental roaches look like?
Adult oriental roaches can grow up to 1 inch in length and are shiny black in color; males and females will vary slightly in appearance. The female oriental roach has a wide body and short wings, while the male has a narrower body and longer wings; neither the male nor female are capable of flight. These roaches can also be identified by a strong, musty odor that they give off.
Oriental roach behaviors
Some people refer to oriental roaches as “water bugs” because they can be seen crawling out of drains or pipes. Outside, oriental roaches live in moist areas like sewers, under leaf piles, under stones, and underneath firewood piles.
Oriental roaches will move inside homes and other buildings if the weather becomes too hot and dry or while searching for food.
Oriental roaches enter homes through the spaces found around utility pipes, underneath doors, and through floor drains. Inside, they can be found hiding and living in basements, crawl spaces, and around washing machines. They will feed on any type of organic matter that they can find and on starchy foods.
Are Oriental roaches dangerous?
Yes, Oriental roaches are a dangerous pest species; the bacteria and pathogens that they carry on their bodies are introduced into your home with them and can cause vomiting, fever, and diarrhea in people. Many people, especially children, are highly allergic to their feces and shed skins which can trigger severe asthma attacks in some.
