Cockroaches can cause food poisoning, dysentery, diarrhea, and other stomach/ gastroenteritis illnesses. The legs and bodies of cockroaches carry the disease causing organisms. When cockroaches explore your kitchen or toothbrush, they deposit organisms that may cause you to become sick. The cockroaches’ legs and bodies spread these diseases on food and utensils as the cockroaches forage. Cockroach excrement and cast skins can also cause your allergies to act up. You might get skin rashes, watery eyes and sneezing, congestion of nasal passages, and asthma as an allergic reaction.
Problem roaches include the German cockroach, American cockroach, Brownbanded cockroach and the Oriental cockroach. The German cockroach is the most common species of the cockroach. German cockroaches can breed at a rate of up to six generations per year.
As the most common type of roach, the German Cockroach, or Blattella germanica, has two fully developed wings. They also have two parallel lines running down its back. These lines change color as they grow older. They are generally 1/2 to 5/8 of an inch long and are a light brown to tan color. The female cockroach will lay her eggs in a protected area. They only live for about 100 to 200 days. They eat on all types of household products like pet food, toothpaste, soap, and glue. They are active at night and hide under cupboards, behind cabinets, in wall voids, and around motor housing in appliances.
Cockroaches typically infest kitchens and bathrooms. They’re attracted to heated structures. They can be found in grocery bags, cardboard boxes, drink cartons, and infested equipment (like used refrigerators, toasters, and microwaves).
