Swarming termites on wood

Thanks to the University of Florida scientist, Thomas Chouvenc, for creating this termite video. He’s created the video to help homeowners realize how important it is to protect their homes from termites. “We estimated that a mature colony can consume more than 5 kilograms of wood per month, so if such a colony feeds on a house, it can quickly compromise the integrity of a structure,” says Chouvenc, assistant professor of urban entomology at the Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center at the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.Watch the 30 second video below to see what happens in the 3 weeks it took to film. Hint: not much of the house is left after termites have destroyed it!

Termites in Numbers

A single colony of termites can range from several hundred thousand termites to several million.

Damage to homes can run in the tens of thousands.
