Yellow jacket wasps are building some of the largest nests in Alabama. Aggressive wasps defend their nests and can inflict multiple stings. Some of these wasp super nests are the size of a Volkswagen Beetle!
Use Caution around Wasps
People should approach these super wasps nests and the smaller wasp nests in our area with caution. A person’s chances of becoming sensitive to the venom increases with every sting.
These insects become a nuisance when they build nests in or near structures; scavenge for food in recreational areas and in other places frequented by humans. They can overwinter in structures.
Yellow jackets build their flat paper nests in stacks, which are surrounded by a paper envelope. They usually build their nests below ground and in other protected locations.
