Homes on Long Island see 4 kinds of cockroaches including German cockroach, American cockroach, Oriental cockroach and Brown Banded cockroach. Many New Yorkers call roaches “Water Bugs”. Whatever you call them, they are just repulsive! Cockroaches spread diseases which cause food poisoning. They spread Salmonella, Shigella, E. coli, Streptococcus (pneumonia), hookworm, pin worms, tapeworms, and even poliomyelitis viruses. Roaches also can cause allergies and asthma.

Long Island Cockroaches are a Year Round Pest

Roaches, like many other pests, live close to food, warmth and water. Cleaning up is an important step in prevention and control. Dirty dishes in your sink, empty soda cans and crumbs on your counter need to be cleaned up!  Wipe up spilled food and put away food into containers.  Unfortunately, you may find roaches in even clean kitchens. They come into homes in grocery bags or on other food products. Sometimes, they wander in from outside. Roaches will eat anything including the paste off the labels of your canned goods. If left unchecked, cockroaches can produce several thousand offspring in a year. You need to find and treat cockroaches directly.

Control of cockroaches takes persistence and experience. An infestation sometimes can be controlled using over-the-counter products, but cockroaches often need to be treated directly. Too much bait may repel the pest, but a professional can place down the right amount, help you properly survey the property to get rid of cockroaches.
