Red bug on washed out wood

By this time of the year, most of us are anxiously awaiting the arrival of warmer weather. In fact, any break we might have gotten from chilly temperatures over the last few months may have been a welcome reprieve. Whether it is the ability to get outdoors and work on a project, or the freedom to take a bike ride without bundling up, an early spring has its benefits. But those positives are not without a few negatives. As leaders in the pest control industry, we view warm weather in December – as well as January and February – with cautious concern. While it may be nice to not have to put on a few extra layers every time we go outside, those higher temps give spring bugs the kind of jumpstart homeowners are not always prepared for. Regardless of how you feel about the weather, a cold winter can kill off some of the bugs we work hard to exterminate, and cause others to remain dormant underground. If nothing else, a sustained period of cold weather keeps pest populations from multiplying. Unfortunately, the opposite happens when those deep freezes never materialize, or come and go quickly. The bugs you typically see very few, if any, of in the winter come out of hiding as the weather warms up. Although their survival may have been in jeopardy during intense cold weather, an out-of-season warming trend is a bug’s signal to begin repopulating. Mild weather, especially if it is also damp, creates the ideal conditions for mosquitoes and cockroaches to thrive. In those situations, speed-dating begins in full-force, causing the insects around your house to rapidly increase. The bugs that had been underground, or burrowed into the bark of a tree, need somewhere to live and something to eat. Your home is the immediate target. While you cannot control the weather, there are steps you can take to mitigate the risk.At Suburban Exterminating, we have pest control plans designed to protect your home and property all year long.
